Funding that outlasts the funding cycle
Most research funding is short-term. A three-year grant produces three years of work, and then a gap while the next application is written and assessed. For programmes that only pay off over a longer horizon — training a generation of researchers, sustaining a community screening programme, maintaining a laboratory — that rhythm is a poor fit.
An endowment addresses this. The capital is held permanently and only the return is spent, so the fund supports its chosen purpose indefinitely. It converts a single act of generosity into permanent capacity, and it lets the Center commit to work that would be irresponsible to begin on three-year money.
