Protected time is the scarce resource
Most early-career researchers do not lack ability or ideas. What they lack is uninterrupted, funded time to pursue a question properly, with access to instrumentation and someone experienced to check their reasoning.
A fellowship supplies exactly that combination. Fellows work on a defined research question within the Center's programmes, with a named supervisor, laboratory access and the expectation of a disseminated output. The point is to produce a researcher as well as a result.
