Doing the work, not watching it
A great many laboratory internships consist of observing, washing glassware and reading. That is not training; it is proximity to training. It teaches a student what a laboratory looks like without teaching them how to work in one.
Our internships are built around supervised practical work. Interns are taught specific techniques, perform them, have their technique corrected, and repeat until it is sound. They keep a laboratory record, follow the same procedures as staff, and are held to the same standards of documentation and safety. An intern who leaves should be able to do something they could not do before.
