What sustains non-profit research

Grants, donations, endowments, sponsorship and consultancy — the mix that keeps research running and subsidised services affordable.

The Center operates on a non-profit basis. That is a commitment about where resources go, not a claim that the work is free: laboratories, reagents, instrumentation, salaries and quality assurance all have to be paid for, and subsidised testing means deliberately recovering less than the cost of some of that work.

We therefore rely on a mix of funding sources. Diversity here is a matter of resilience, not ambition — a research programme dependent on a single funder is a research programme that ends when that funder's priorities change.

Our commitments

How we handle funding

Scientific independence

Funding does not determine findings. We do not accept arrangements that condition support on a particular result or restrict publication of an unfavourable one.

Transparency

Sources of funding for a piece of research are declared in the resulting publications and reports.

Directed to purpose

Funds are applied to research, facilities, training and subsidised services in line with our founding objectives.

Discuss funding or partnership

Whether you are a funding body, a company, a foundation or an individual, we would be glad to discuss how support could be directed.
