Grant funding and its trade-offs
Competitive grants are the backbone of most research funding. They bring peer review, which improves proposals, and they bring a defined scope, which keeps programmes disciplined.
They also bring constraints. Grant cycles are slow, funder priorities shift, and a centre that shapes its research to whatever is currently fundable ends up with a portfolio driven by fashion rather than need. We treat grants as one component of a mixed funding base, not as the whole of it, so that necessary work does not stop when it happens to be unfashionable.

Conditions we hold to on grant funding
- Funding does not determine findings
- We do not accept terms that suppress unfavourable results
- The right to publish is agreed before work begins
- Funding sources are declared on every resulting output
- Funds are applied to the purpose for which they were given
- Reporting to funders is accurate, including where targets were missed
- Ethical and regulatory approvals precede any funded work
- Overheads are stated transparently
